Origins
The appellation extends over 350 hectares, of which 124 are rated as Premiers Crus, with 10% exclusively dedicated to white wines. The right to use the words "Premier Cru" is a distinction granted to certain climats whose wines are traditionally highly regarded. These climats (the Burgundian word for a plot planted with vines) are specially delimited, in acknowledgement of their special characteristics and consistent quality.
The "Clos de Rousseau" plot covers 15.95 hectares and is located south-west of the hamlet of Saint-Jean.
The vines grow on a brown limestone soil rich in clay and silt, inherited from the Middle Jurassic period. The wines it produces are well-known for their firm character and floral aromas as well as supple tannins.
As for its name, this 1er Cru is certainly the witness of the past: it is more than likely to have belonged to a familly named Rousseau, which is a very common last name in the region.
Vinification and maturing
After the fermentation, the wine was aged in oak barrels for 15 to 17 months, using a proportion of 25% new oak for a delicate toast.
