100% Pinot Noir.

Tasting notes

Colour: A nice, pale garnet red.
Bouquet: Delicate, mostly fruity aromas, with complexe and toasted notes brought by the oak ageing.
Palate: A sensual impression in the mouth, with liveliness and tonicity, fruity and floral flavours, a good, velvety structure and a lot of elegance.

 

Food and wine pairing

Will be perfect with feathered game, steak tartare, guinea fowl with a turnip bake, pan-fried Brussels sprouts with bacon or a tender piece of Tome cheese from Savoie.

Serving suggestions

Drink ideally at a temperature of 14 to 16°C. (57-60°F.).

Ageing potential

In good storage conditions it will age patiently for 8 to 10 years.

Origins

The village of Volnay lies to the south of Pommard, between two hills that protect it from the wind, on one of the highest points of the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy.

Vines were already grown here in Gallo-Roman times. In the Middle Ages, Volnay was a summer residence of the Dukes of Burgundy and later of the Dukes. The Knights Templar owned property and vines in Volnay, which were then bequeathed in the 14th century to the Brotherhood of the Blessed Sacrament, founded by Philip the Bold. The typicality of these wines made from Pinot Noir grapes was recognised and mentioned as early as the beginning of the 18th century, and appellation status was established in 1937.

The origin of the name Robardelle comes from the location of this Premier Cru, not far from the old Roman road and quarries where highwaymen (robarts) could make a quick getaway.

Vinification and maturing

The grapes are harvested by hand and sorted manually on arrival at the winery. 100% of the grapes were de-stemmed. Vinification of 20 days in thermos regular tanks. Cold maceration for 6 days at 8°C. Nine days of fermentation with punching twice a day during the fermentation at a temperature of 30°C. Ageing in Burgundian oak barrels of 228 litres with 30% new oak barrels.

Vintage : 2018

Once again, the 2018 vintage in Burgundy offered the vision scenario of an early harvest. It was already the case in 2017, and 2018 was even earlier! This vintage comes in the earliest harvest palmares compare to the norm (around the 20th of September) and come just in the second place after the unforgettable 2003 vintage when harvest between the 20 and the 25th of August in the Côte d’Or department.

All along the year 2018, the weather was very diverse, even atypical according to the month and the area. After a rainy start in the year, the spring period was very summery with sunshine above the seasonal norms and quite scarce rain.

This trend continued until the harvest with a very hot and dry summer, this allowed the grapes to finish their maturation early. Harvest started on the 20th of August and lasted until the third week of September… a particularly long amplitude.

At least quality is here for this 2018 vintage, but also quantity. Grapes arrived to the winery with a perfect state of health. Concentrated, structured, generous, rich and powerful are some of the adjectives that characterize this magnificent vintage.
